PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

A.    POLA KALIMAT POSITIVE

 SUBJECT + TO BE (WERE/WAS) + VERB-ING

Ingat bahwa were digunakan untuk subjek we, you, they atau subjek jamak, sedangkan was untuk subjek I, he, she, it atau subjek tunggal, misalnya:

     I was listening to the radio at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

     he was doing his hoomework at 7 o’clock last night.

     she was having breakfast at 6 o’clock this morning.

     We were playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

     You were sleeping at 9 o’clock last night.

     They were playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

B.    POLA KALIMAT NEGATIVE

Kalimat negative dibentuk dengan menambahkan NOT setelah TO BE. (was/were).

SUBJECT + TO BE + NOT + VERB-ING

Contoh:

     I was not (wasn’t) listening to the radio at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

     he was not (wasn’t) doing his hoomework at 7 o’clock last night.

     she was not (wasn’t) having breakfast at 6 o’clock this morning.

     We were not (weren’t) playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

     You were not (weren’t) sleeping at 9 o’clock last night.

     They were not (weren’t) playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

C.     POLA KALIMAT TANYA DENGAN JAWABAN “YES/NO”

Kalimat tanya yang membutuhkan jawaban ‘YES’ atau ‘NO’ dibentuk dengan memindahkan TO BE (was/were) pada awal pertanyaan.

TO BE + SUBJECT +VERB-ING?

  Contoh :

     Was I listening to the radio at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon?

     Was he doing his hoomework at 7 o’clock last night?

     Were we playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon?

     Were you sleeping at 9 o’clock last night?

     Were they playing football at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon?

D.    FUNGSI PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

Past Continuous Tense digunakan untuk:

1.     Menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu yang tidak tentu dimasa lampau, misalnya:

They were watching television all day long.

He was listening to the musicall night long.

2.     Menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang berlangsungpada waktu tertentupada masa lampau:

They were doing their homework at 7 o’clock last night.

I was listening to the radio at 6 o’clock this morning.

3.     Menyatakan suatu peristiwa yang sudah dimulai dan sedang berlangsung di masa lampau ketika kejadian lain terjadi. Kegiatan pertama yang sedang berlangsungitu dinyatakan dengan past continuous tense sedangkan peristiwa lain yang terjadi kemudian dinyatakan dengan past tense, misalnya:

I was watching television when the telephone rang.

(saya sedang menonton televisi ketika telepon berdering.)

We were having dinner when she arrived.

(kami sedang makan malam ketika dia tiba.)
